Job purpose

The Director of Merchandising is responsible for the day to day management and development of business processes to maximize sales and gross margin objectives, while managing Category objectives for specific brands. Develops strategic objectives to ensure long-term sustained growth of Categories, or wind down plans for declining Categories. Develops a collaborative team culture within the Merchandising organization, and has a demonstrated ability to forge mutually beneficial partnerships between the vendor and the merchant. Support a high quality merchandising team by developing partnerships, leading, coaching and providing both positive and constructive feedback. The DOM will be the person that will understand what is happening in the Market with our products and Categories, to determine where they fit and their lifecycle.

Duties and responsibilities

  •  Oversees the assortment strategy for multiple Categories. Works collaboratively with vendor and brand partners to maximize first to market approach of trending products, promotional and pricing strategy for the assigned Category placement.
  •  Develop the Merchandising Line by Category, and keeping up with the changes in Categories, as well as the introduction of new Categories, and the winding down of non-performing Categories
  • Actively partners with pricing and promotional peers to ensure optimal performance against sales and margin. Directs collaboratively with the marketing and operations team to ensure a ‘customer first’ approach to the product strategy. Leads collaboratively with the Planning and Allocation team to ensure ideal inventory levels. Develops and facilitates presentations to all levels of leadership.
  • Leads and provides feedback to buyers and analyzes and draws conclusions from multiple resources so as to provide a concise, logical merchandising focus. Oversees and promotes new products and trends in a timely manner to maximize sales potential. Devises profitable exit strategies, including vendor participation, of slow selling items, discontinued items, package changes and poor promotional sell through.
  • Foster and oversees strong relationships with key vendors to ensure partnerships that deliver strong product and financial results that reduce costs, increase margin, special terms, discounts, allowances and payment dating in all appropriate opportunities.
  • Develop talent for Category leadership; additionally, mentor/develop team and provides feedback to those sharing Category expertise based on competitive analysis. Attends vendor meetings and tradeshow presentations to identify sales opportunities through new products, trends and competitive strategies.

Qualifications & Skills Required

  • College degree (BA or BS), in Merchandise Management or related field
  • 5 years experience in a large retail/wholesale distribution company preferred
  • Experience in Purchasing at the Management Level
  • NetSuite ERP experience preferred
  • Excellent PC skills including MS Office
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to plan, forecast, and exercise sound judgment.
